Dog protected abandoned newborn, doctors say

(CNN) — A dog sheltered a newborn baby abandoned by its 14-year-old mother in a field in rural Argentina until the boy was rescued, a doctor said Friday.

A resident of a rural area outside La Plata called police late Wednesday night to say that he had heard the baby crying in a field behind his house.

The man went outside and found the infant lying beside the dog and its six newborn puppies, said Daniel Salcedo, chief of police of the Province of Buenos Aires.

The teenager was immediately given psychological treatment and was hospitalized, he said. She has said little about the incident.

The child has been transferred to a children’s hospital in La Plata, 37 miles from Buenos Aires.

The temperature was a chilly 37 degrees, Salcedo said.

The dog had apparently carried the baby 50 meters from where his mother had abandoned him to where the puppies were huddled, police said.

“She took it like a puppy and rescued it,” Salcedo said. “The doctors told us if she hadn’t done this, he would have died.

“The dog is a hero to us.”

Dr. Egidio Melia, director of the Melchor Romero Hospital in La Plata, said police showed up at the hospital at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday with the baby, who doctors say was only a few hours old.

Though the infant had superficial scratches and bruises and was bleeding from his mouth, he was in good shape, Melia said.

The next morning, the child’s mother was driven by a neighbor to the hospital and told authorities that the 8-pound, 13-ounce infant is hers, Melia said.

The teenager was immediately given psychological treatment and was hospitalized, he said. She has said little about the incident.

If you are unaware, IKEA is coming to Cincinnati! Whoooootay whoooo!

I have been waiting for it’s grand opening with bated breath since hearing this wonderful news in summer 2006. I love IKEA. In fact most of my furniture is from the Chicago store. I made a grueling 24 hour round-trip there in 2001 and came back with an entire truckload of stuff. In fact I furnished my living room and bedroom (including couch, but sans mattresses and bed frame) for around $2,500. It’s definitely become one of my guilty pleasures. I have to hit IKEA anytime I’m in Chi-town visiting friends or in Phoenix visiting the fam. I’ve even called my stepmom and asked her to pick up items and ship them to me. I’ll admit that it’s not the highest quality around. But when your a single girl, affordable and stylish wins out every time. To have one just minutes from home may be a death wish for my checking account! I’ve been tracking the progress of the big, blue building for months… it’s just a couple of minutes from my dentist’s office. And what’s even more exciting is the announcement that the Cincinnati store is opening on March 12… which just happens to be my birthday!!! I might just have to party in the store.    :D

One of the things I’d like to do before I leave planet #3 in the solar system, is see an Aurora Borealis, aka the Northern Lights. I’ve seen many pictures of this phenomenon, but I would love the opportunity to see it in person sometime. I found this article today on what scientist believe causes this cool little show. Charged particles and twisted magnetic fields… I don’t understand it all, but I think it’s really pretty.

Yes, it’s been confirmed. I am a geek.     ;)

This weekend, I spent a “weekend away” at Marriott Residence Inn in Erlanger, just across the river in NKY. While it wasn’t exactly out of town, it was still a nice escape from home and work…with free wifi, cable, a big, comfy bed and free breakfast! An enormous thank you to Charlie for thinking of me and very generously cashing in some of his rewards points for my stay. Unfortunately, he wasn’t there with me, but it was definitely a nice getaway after all the stress I’ve had during the last week. Too bad it is back to reality today…wish weekends were longer. :)

Crossroads TFD!!! November 27, 2007

Two weekends ago I had the opportunity to volunteer at Crossroads Thanksgiving Food Drive. I truly enjoy volunteering and feel such a rush knowing that I’m part of something bigger than myself and the compartmentalized little world I live in. It reminds me that no matter what’s going on in my life that I am truly blessed. It’s actually really humbling and in a good way. I’ve never gone a Thanksgiving or Christmas without food on my table, gifts to unwrap, and my friends or family around me. I can’t even imagine the alternative. And that’s one reason I try to put myself out there during the holidays, trying to make even one person’s holiday a little happier. Sometimes I get so disgruntled with shopping, budgeting, and dealing with people who seem to just act wretched during this time of year. So these opportunities to serve others bring me back to the reason why I like the holidays. This Thanksgiving, Crossroads Thanksgiving Food Drive delivered 5000 boxes to other churches and charities in Cincinnati, as well as to folks in Mamelodi, South Africa… that’s about 66,000 meals. AMAZING! In the words of the Grinch, it makes my heart grow three times it size to know that I was a small part of that. Here’s a clip from WLWT News 5…check it out. And here are a few snapshots I took…   tfd-1.jpgtfd-2.jpgtfd-5.jpgtfd-6.jpgtfd-11.jpg

i heart louisville… September 4, 2007

Charlie and I just got back from a couple of days in Louisville. I think we’re in love…

Louisville is what I wish Cincinnati could be. Granted we stayed in the “East Market/Main” district… But you can tell by just treking around a bit that this is a city who cares about it’s downtown area and has a vision of what they want it to be. This is an old river town and developers have made good use of the building stock, instead of simply letting it go to waste and then either tearing it down or sit and become an eyesore. It also brings a visual consistency, which adds to the character of the area. Louisville is ranked among the safest large US cities and you can tell… We walked around the city quite a bit and never once did we feel unsafe and we were never approached by anyone asking for money. Charlie was impressed by how clean the city streets were kept, the building codes (even the alleys were well kept), and how many people were out on the bike routes. I love Cincinnati and I’ve enjoyed my time here… however I also pay attention to what happens around town. The city is divided in so many ways… politically, socio-economically, racially… shall I go on? 89 homicides last year. Where do I live the bowels of hell? Millions of dollars were spent on the Fountain Square renovation. But who wants to go downtown? I’ve lived here for nearly 5 years and have seen absolutely no progress on “The Banks.” So, I’ll continue to go across the river to see a movie or grab a drink and put my money into Newport’s economy. I went to Party in the Park last week… I drove across the Big Mac bridge and paid $3 to park in the Levee garage, just so I could feel some sense of security and not worry about coming back to a broken car window. On thing I’ve learned in my brief time in the Queen City is that Cincinnati think it’s very important. The town and it’s citizens are, with some exceptions, stuck on themselves. It’s almost “Stepford”-like in that it portrays this certain image, but internally it’s so divided that it can’t get anything done. The city is a mess. I’m certain that Louisville has it’s share of problems too… What urban area doesn’t? But it obviously has a vision and it’s running with it and it’s working.

a nice surprise August 19, 2007

Every weekend I take the AA highway from Cincinnati to Grayson, KY on my way to Huntington, WV. It’s usually an uneventful drive through rural Kentucky. But this Friday I got a nice surprise when driving through the tiny little town of Maysville, KY. The sunset was filled with about 20 hot air balloons. Call me a dork, but I’ve never gotten over thinking these were cool. My irrational fear of heights would never allow me to actually take a ride in one… but I think they are beautiful. I love all the vibrant colors against a bright, blue sky… or in this case, the setting sun. Unfortunately I didn’t have the digital camera with me on this trip, but I was able to get a few shots with the camera phone.
